Rural Health

An estimated 25% of Americans live in rural areas, but only 10% of US doctors practice in rural areas.  18% of the rural population is 65 years and older compared to only 15% of the urban population of older adults. An increasing percentage of the American population is migrating to rural areas. As the population continues to age, rural Americans will live with multiple chronic and serious illnesses but have less access to quality geriatric and palliative care. Stanford General Medical Disciplines (GMD) and the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) have launched a rural health portal to provide e-learning resources for rural clinicians, patients and families. This portal is directed by Dr. VJ Periyakoil.
